Centos install guide

The 8th version of CentOS was released on September 24, I will say that the CentOS 8 installation process does not differ from that of the previous version, and this article is intended as a guide for the users who do it for the first time.

Boot your computer or virtual machine from CentOS install image. In the first step you will be prompted to select further actions. Since we need the installation, select the first item in the menu:. While the necessary software is being loaded, you can just watch the process and do not need to do anything. When the black screen changes to an interactive one with CentOS logo, keep your keyboard and mouse at hand. On the welcome screen, you will be prompted to select the language that will be during the installation process.

Then click Continue. In the next menu you will select the basic CentOS installation settings. To start the installation, you are required to configure only one item: Installation Destination.

There you select the disk partition layout, but I prefer to configure network, time and date at this stage.

Specify your server name in the Host Name field, and click Configure to configure the network interfaces. In the General tab, check the box Automatically connect to this network when it is available to automatically start this network interface. To enter the specific IP address , select Manual method and click Add.

After saving the changes, go back to the initial network configuration screen. As you can see in the screenshot, the IP address has been added and the network interface is working status: Connected. Just to show the installation process, I used automatic storage configuration by CentOS developers. If you want to partition a disk in some other way, select Custom here. Since a guest OS had been installed on my virtual machine earlier, the installation saw it.

I removed the partitions of the previous operating system in the next menus that appeared:. In the event of a system crash, kdump captures information that can be invaluable in determining the cause of the crash.

This kernel crash dumping mechanism requires a part of the system memory that will be reserved just for its use. Kdump is enabled by default, with automatic memory reservation. The installation wizard will automatically detect locally accessible interfaces which will be listed in the left pane. You can select a network and activate or deactivate it. After the installation of CentOS, follow our guides to learn more details about configuring your network settings and how to change hostname on CentOS 8.

They should only be enforced if a policy is required by specific organization rules or government regulations. Start by creating a root password. Bear in mind that this needs to be a strong password. The root user is used for system administration and has access to all commands and files. For uncrackable password ideas, consider some of our suggestions for greater system protection. Next, create a user with non-root privileges for everyday use.

Then, type in your full name and a user name for the system. Tick the boxes that make the user an administrator and require password confirmation. Finally, provide the password you want to use and retype it to confirm. Wait until the installation is complete. You will receive a message that CentOS Linux 8 has been successfully installed and is ready to use.

To start using the new OS, you first need to Reboot the system. The system restarts and opens an Initial Setup window with a Licensing Agreement that you must accept to finish the configuration. Click on the License Information and tick the box to confirm you accept the agreement.

With the initial setup and configuration done, the installation wizard redirects you to the login screen. Type in the password you assigned to your user and hit Enter.

This is the source for rpm packages, CentOS has a lot of online repositories which provides rpms for the installation. For demo purpose, i have used the following repository. Select protocol, enter url on the box and then configure proxy if the system acccessing internet through proxy server. Wait for some, it will download package metadata. Once it is download, you will see the url in the Installation source. This is used to select the packages that you want to install, here i chose to install Minimal Server.

Once you have selected, click on DONE. Wait for some, installer will check the dependencies for the selected packages.
